Meredith Books, which had strong gains in sales for the first six months of fiscal 2004 ended December 31, will enter the children's book market later this year. Although the company has published a few titles for children tied to its magazines, "we've never had a major presence," said publisher Jim Blume. That will change in 2004 when Meredith releases 15 to 20 children's books.
To speed its entry into the children's market, Meredith has signed a number of licensing deals. Under an agreement with Marvel, Meredith will publish four books related to the SpiderMan II movie that will hit movie screens in early July. Meredith will publish a party book, a story book and two sound story books that will be released in June, Blume said. The company has also licensed the rights to do two Strawberry Shortcake story books and is working on other licensing deals, Blume said. The list will also include books drawn from Meredith's magazines.
Meredith's current editorial staff is handling the children's rollout, but Blume said the company plans to hire a product manager and editorial staff. "We see it [the children's market] as a great place to look for more growth," Blume said.
