In line with its commitment to publish the best contemporary creative artists, W.W. Norton has signed renowned comics artist R. Crumb to create a nonfiction graphic work. The deal was negotiated by Crumb's agent, Judith Hansen of the Kitchen, and Hansen Agency in conjunction with Lora Fountain of Agence Littéraire Lora Fountain & Associates, which is based Paris.
The book was acquired by Bob Weil, executive editor at Norton, who termed it a "major deal." Weil told PW, "The graphic novel and the graphic history are becoming essential components of a well-balanced list." Weil said he anticipates "great interest" in the work from domestic, foreign and college markets.
Weil and Hansen declined to reveal the book's subject. But industry sources said that the book will be a "literal" interpretation of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.
The Crumb work is the second graphic nonfiction acquisition for Weil. In 2005, Norton will publish The Plot: The Secret Story of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion by Will Eisner.
