Houghton Mifflin's Kingfisher Publications imprint is joining with the New York Times to produce a line of nonfiction books for readers age 10 to 14. Kingfisher specializes in illustrated nonfiction and reference books for kids. The new line will release four books a year, and while the subjects of the books have not been finalized, both parties said the books will likely deal with current affairs, science, technology, culture, sports and design.
Nancy Grant, v-p, managing director of Kingfisher, pointed out the importance of having the New York Times as a partner and noted that the deal reflects "the great role nonfiction is now playing in the classroom."
Alex Ward, editorial director of book development at the NYT, said the agreement recognizes the "importance of fostering a curiosity about the world among young people."
