And this time it's not Dr. Phil, but coach Phil—Phil Jackson, that is: the nine-time NBA champion coach, whose book climbs to #6 in its second week on PW's nonfiction list.
The Last Season: A Team in Search of Its Soul went on sale on October 21 following a barrage of early media attention, due mainly to an excerpt in Sports Illustrated and a feature in the Los Angeles Times. Jackson, who is retired (for the moment), launched his campaign with appearances on ESPN, Fox's The Best Damn Sports Show Period, The Late Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Entertainment Tonight and two national radio satellite tours; print interviews have run in Time, USA Today and the Chicago Tribune. Still to come, said Penguin Press associate publisher Tracy Locke, are two NPR gigs (Fresh Air and All Things Considered) and the Yes Network's Center Stage. Locke reported that Jackson's first bookstore stop was at Vroman's in Pasadena, Calif., where he signed more than 1,300 books. Copies in print: 228,000 after five trips to press.
