A new book by
Melissa Fay Greene , author of Praying for Sheetrock and other admired books, was signed by
Karen Rinaldi for Bloomsbury. It's called In Haregewoin's Compound, and is the remarkable story of an Ethiopian woman whose family was afflicted by the AIDS epidemic rampaging through her country, and who opened her home to children orphaned by the disease. Eventually, hundreds gathered there, and her compound expanded to include a school, a clinic, day care and other amenities. Greene first told the story in a New York Times Magazine article two years ago that helped to raise funds for the compound and to get many of the children adopted; Greene herself has two of them, among her seven children. Rinaldi bought North American rights from
David Black and will publish in fall 2006.
