Toppan, the printer for Alice Press's Eva: Eloge de Ma Fille, has agreed to handle warehousing and fulfillment for the book following the refusal of Stackpole Distribution to perform those functions. Stackpole claimed that the book, a photographic collection by Irina Ionesco of her daughter, Eva, could expose the company to criminal prosecution. Toppan began shipping backorders from its Somerset, N.J., warehouse last week. Booksellers can order Eva directly through the press's Toronto-based distributor, Hushion House.
"Hushion has been great in standing by me through this," Alice Press founder Tristan DuBois told PW. He likened Ionesco's work to that of controversial photographers such as Jock Sturges and Graham Ovenden, who shoot explicit images. "Given that Eva clearly has artistic merit, it should not be called obscene," said DuBois.
