Robert Mandel has been appointed director of the University of Alaska Press. Mandel, who's taught at several Canadian universities, began his publishing career at Praeger Publications and was most recently at University of Wisconsin Press.

Debra Matsumoto has joined Ten Speed Press as senior marketing and promotions manager. She was publicity manager at North Atlantic Books and before that, spent 18 years at Chronicle Books.
Blake Joins B'way Books
Tammy Blake has been named publicity director at Broadway Books. She'll be arriving from Crown Publishers, where she was director of publicity and worked on campaigns for a number of bestselling cookbook authors including Rachael Ray, Tyler Florence and Ina Garten.

Joanna Smith Rakoff has been promoted from features editor to editor at Nextbook.org, an online publication about Jewish culture. Before joining Nextbook, Smith Rakoff was a freelance writer; her work has appeared in such publications as the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and Book magazine.
Serota to Canongate
Anya Serota is joining Canongate Books as editorial director. Serota, who will be based in the publisher's London office, is decamping from her role as senior editor and publisher at John Murray.
