Audio Bits
Sounds Like a Birthday!

Sounds True, the Colorado-based audio publisher of enlightenment titles, or "tools for the inner life," as the company likes to call them, has come of age. The publisher is celebrating 21 years in business, an achievement that encompasses "800 titles created, 10 million programs sold, 18 reasonably behaved office dogs and innumerable life-changing insights."

Founded by Tami Simon back in 1985 primarily as a conference recording business, Sounds True has flourished under Simon's vision (she invested her own money in the startup) and determination. The company has grown from a one-employee/one-room operation to what is now a staff of 55 in the Louisville, Colo., headquarters.

Top-selling authors on the list include Carolyn Myss, Jack Kornfield and Thich Nhat Hanh. See forthcoming titles on page 43.

Papa Comes to Simon & Schuster

The classic works of Nobel- and Pulitzer Prize—winner Ernest Hemingway are now available exclusively from Simon & Schuster Audio. The publishing arrangement enables S&S to produce Hemingway's major titles for a new generation, and the company is doing so with an impressive lineup of seasoned actor-narrators that includes Donald Sutherland, William Hurt, Campbell Scott and (on the previously released The Short Stories collections) Stacy Keach.

The new audio releases, which began rolling out in May, complement Scribner's print list of Hemingway's titles, uniting all of the author's works in various formats under one corporate roof.

Never Land Nation

Peter Pan, the ageless boy of J.M. Barrie's classic play and novel, continues to experience a resurgence—and this season, it's in audio. In October, Simon & Schuster Audio releases Peter Pan in Scarlet, the audio edition of the much buzzed-about, officially sanctioned sequel to Peter Pan, penned by British author Geraldine MaCaughrean. The narrator has not yet been announced.

Also in October, Listening Library is releasing a new recording of the original Barrie novel performed by the inimitable Jim Dale. Dale will promote the title on a tour this fall and a royalty from sales of this recording will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, the organization to which Barrie had granted his royalties upon his death.

Deeper into the spinoff front: in July, Brilliance Audio published Ridley Pearson and Dave Barry's Peter and the Shadow Thieves, a prequel to Barrie's classic and a companion to the team's Peter and the Starcatchers (both recorded by Dale), all published in print by Disney Editions/Hyperion Books for Children. If you're still with us, Brilliance is additionally releasing Escape from the Carnivale: A Never Land Adventure by the same authors and narrator, a spinoff of the spinoff.

But Brilliance isn't the only crew to harvest audio treasure from Disney's Peter. Listening Library/Imagination Studio also releases two fall titles in the Disney Fairies line of stories about Tinker Bell and her fairy friends that launched in 2005 with Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg (published by Disney Press in print) by Gail Carson Levine.

Shambhala Audio Returns

After an eight-year hiatus, Shambhala Publications, headquartered in Boston and known for its titles on spiritual practices, personal development and wisdom from Eastern and Western religious traditions, is reentering the audio market. "Although we kept many of our previously produced programs in print through publishing partners, we felt there was a need and a market for new audio programs based on the types of books Shambhala has been publishing for the past 35 years," said Shambhala's audio director Leonard Jacobs.

Shambhala plans to roll out five to eight audio projects each year, a mix of book-and-CD titles as well as recordings of lectures and seminars. See the inaugural titles on page 42.
