Even more than in previous years, if an author wanted to grab a high ranking on these end-of-the-year bestseller charts, he/she had to have been there before. All of the top 30 fiction bestsellers in 2006 were name-brand authors who've been regulars on our annual charts. And these veterans are prolific—at least six of them placed two or more books in the top 30. It's not any easier for nonfiction contenders—all of the top 30 boast impressive platforms that translate into easy media access and the ability to garner strong sales.

There were no new sales records set in either fiction or nonfiction last year. Two years ago, Mitch Albom's debut novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, racked up sales of more than 3.2 million, just enough to get him the #2 slot in 2004 (those were The Da Vinci Code times, when the #1 book sold more than four million copies). In 2006, sales of a mere 2.7 million for For One More Day put Albom on the top. Still, eight fiction titles claimed annual sales of one million or more, the same as in 2004 but two less than in 2005.

In 2005, James Patterson set a record, placing four books in the top 15; he did so again in 2006 and even though he had help from co-authors on three of those books, it's still an impressive feat. Stephen King gave his writing colleagues a break in the last two years, when he took a hiatus from writing for hardcover, but he came back with a vengeance, claiming two of the million-copy leaders. And the best first fiction performance last year was Diane Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale, #32, with sales of about 305,000 copies. It was the first time in several years that a debut novel did not land in one of the top 15 spots.

The Nonfiction category was heavily populated with well-known personalities—politicians and political pundits, media folk and chefs—plus, in the top-15, there were four titles continuing from the 2005 year-end chart, including The World Is Flat and Freakonomics; both extended their bestselling franchises with revised, expanded versions of their bestsellers. Rick Warren's The Purpose-Driven Life, which had set sales records in 2003 (11.3 million) and 2004 (7.3 million), plus 2.5 million in 2005, made it to #11 last year, with about 800,000 sold. And John Grisham's first foray into nonfiction, The Innocent Man, got him first place in nonfiction, with sales of more than 2.1 million

Faith and food continued to be nonfiction crowd pleasers. In addition to Warren, religion was well represented by Robin McGraw, Billy Graham, Joyce Meyer and Max Lucado, among others. Paula Deen had the bestselling cookbook, Paula Deen Celebrates; she also had three more titles with sales of more than 100,000. Another Food Network star with several books among the top sellers is Giada de Laurentiis. For both women, this is their second season of serious success. And the 75th-anniversary edition of the classic Joy of Cooking sold more than 500,000 copies.

What the Numbers Mean

As always, all calculations on these pages are based on shipped-and-billed figures supplied by publishers for new books released in 2005 and 2006 (a few books published earlier that continued their tenures on our 2006 weekly lists and/or our monthly religion lists are included). These figures reflect only 2006 sales, and publishers were asked not to include book club and overseas transactions. We also asked them to take into account returns through January 31; it would be safe to assume that not all did. Sales figures on these pages should not be considered final. For many of these books, especially those published in the final third of the year, returns were not yet calculated.

The figures below that are marked with a pound sign (#) were submitted to PW in confidence, for use in placing titles on the lists. Those numbers are rounded down to indicate their relationship to figures for other titles.

2006 Bestsellers

* All sales figures reflect books sold only in calendar year 2006.
# Sales figures were submitted to PW in confidence, for use in placing titles on the lists. Numbers shown are rounded down to indicate relationship to sales figures for other titles.
Note: Rankings are determined by sales figures provided by publishers; the numbers generally reflect reports of copies "shipped and billed" in calendar year 2006. Publishers were instructed to adjust sales figures to include returns through January 31, 2007. Publishers did not at that time know what total returns would be—indeed, the majority of returns occur after that cutoff date—so none of these figures should be regarded as final net sales. (Dates in parentheses indicate month and year of publication.)
