It says something about America today that some of the bestselling books on religion were written by atheists. After years of enormous sales for self-help religion tomes, the mood of the country has darkened, and with it the attitudes of many toward faith.

It was just a year ago we spotted this trend (“New in Religion: Anti-Religion,” July 10, 2006), though the debate has so dominated public discourse since then it seems longer. And although there is a smattering of new books on atheism coming this fall, there are not nearly as many as might have been expected. Publishers seem to be approaching the topic with caution, perhaps wondering what kind of legs it can have in a famously religious country. And is it possible there's less to say about unbelief than about belief in all its varieties?

More common this season are books responding to or refuting atheism, and one genre undergoing a revival in the midst of all of this is Christian apologetics, or arguments in defense of that faith. There also are plenty of efforts to rehabilitate the image of Jesus, to rescue him from either the right or the left.

Of course, there is no stanching the flow of books on politics and religion, both new critiques and reprints of backlist titles. Next fall, on the brink of a crucial election, there are sure to be even more.
