Green and black are the colors of this year's BookExpo America, returning to Los Angeles for the first time since 2003. A large chunk of Friday's educational programming is devoted to going green—specifically how bookstores, publishing house and consumers can be more environmentally aware. Then on Saturday night, things turn black as The Daily Show comic Lewis Black performs at the Orpheum Theater to benefit the Book Industry Foundation (and plug his forthcoming book, Me of Little Faith).
Like last year's BEA in New York, the ABA's Day of Education will be held at the Hotel ABA (the Renaissance Hollywood at 1755 N. Highland Ave.) and not at the L.A. Convention Center. Although there will be shuttle buses covering the nine miles between the convention center and Hotel ABA (as well as buses from various hotels to the convention center), we should mention the taxi situation in Los Angeles. Unlike cabs in New York, Chicago and Washington, most of the taxis in Los Angeles will not stop for people flagging them on the street. You'll need to find a major hotel taxi stand or call a cab service in advance when setting off for various events.
