Levy, Zafón New At Number 1

New titles from bestselling authors landed atop the fiction lists in Spain and France in May, while Wetlands continued to enjoy its strong run in Germany. Wetlands was the subject of a lengthy New York Times piece earlier this month: the book has touched off a debate in Germany about women's roles and images in German society. In describing the sex and grooming habits of the novel's narrator, author Charlotte Roche, a television personality, leaves little to the imagination. Grove plans to publish Wetlands in the U.S. next spring.

The top-selling fiction title in France last month was by the hugely popular Marc Levy. According to the author's Web site, his five books prior to All Those Things We NeverSaid have sold 15 million copies combined worldwide. In the U.S., Atria released one Levy title, If Only It Were True, in trade paperback in 2005, as well as the tie-in to the movie adapted from the book, Just Like Heaven. It's a different story for Carlos Ruiz Zafón—rights to his second novel, The Angel's Game, were sold to Doubleday in a heated auction this spring. Vintage has already published a Spanish-language edition of the book in the U.S. The title is a prequel to his megaseller, The Shadow of the Wind, and was reported to have had a million-copy first printing in Spain.
