The top nonfiction spots in France, Spain and Sweden are all occupied by new titles. In Spain, The Queen in Person, which reveals the private opinions of the usually very private Queen Sofia, has caused some controversy in the country, helping to land the biography in the #1 position. Debuting in second place is Gomorrah, the long-running Italian bestseller about the Mafia's influence over Naples; it's just out in the U.S. from Picador. Nobel winner Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio already has a bestseller on the French list and the biography of his father, The African, debuted at #1 in Sweden last month. The new nonfiction bestseller in France is the reflections on the life of Sister Emmanuelle, released shortly after her death.
Several American titles have hit the top 10 in fiction, but the top of the lists are mostly filled with international authors. Liza Marklund, the popular Swedish thriller writer, maintained her hold on the top spot in her native country, but Conn Iggulden, who gained fame in the U.S. as the coauthor of The Dangerous Book for Boys, lands in the third spot with Lords of the Bow, the newest volume in his Genghis Khan series. The next book in the series due out in the U.S. is Genghis: Bones of the Hills, which Delacorte will publish in hardcover in March.
