Despite the recent reports of doom and gloom in the book business, our spring announcements indicate an optimistic outlook: we received submissions from 775 publishers—many of them new to these listings—which represents a 5% increase over the fall 2008 roster. Okay, so business books aren't exactly brimming with cheer (e.g., three titles on the Bear Stearns demise), but what's bad about a fiction list that includes works by Thomas Pynchon, Chuck Palahniuk, Denis Johnson, Colm Tóibin and Roberto Bolaño? For more optimism, check out the NEA's January 12 report, “Reading on the Rise,” in which outgoing chairman Dana Gioia noted, “Literary reading has risen in the U.S. for the first time in a quarter century.” Pick your favorites.

Unfortunately, economic realities are impossible to ignore, and, beginning with these listings, we are no longer including our original trade paper title listings in the print version of the magazine; they can can be found on our Web site at www.publishersweekly.com/spring2009tradepaperlistings.
