Jens Lapidus had a big hit in Sweden last year with Never Fuck Up, and his new book, a graphic novel illustrated by Peter Bergting, debuted at #1 last month. Gang War 145 is the third title in what Lapidus calls his Stockholm Noir series. Lapidus does not have an American publisher. Landing in the second spot was Mari Jungstedt, with the newest installment in Jungstedt's Anders Knutas mystery series. Minotaur published a previous Knutas mystery, The Inner Circle, in November.
In Spain, the highest-ranking debut came in at #4 with Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind. The first title in a fantasy trilogy, Wind was published in the U.S. in hardcover by DAW Books in 2007 and trade paperback this spring.
In nonfiction there were a number of titles either debuting high on bestsellers lists or moving up the ranks. D-Day: The Battle for Normandy by Antony Beevor landed in third place in both France and Sweden and is scheduled to be released in the U.S. by Viking this fall. With the Tour de France in full stride, the top-selling nonfiction book in France at the end of June was a look back on the cycling world by French star Laurent Fignon. The worldwide economic crisis is the focus of six of the top 10 nonfiction bestsellers in Spain.
