New fiction took the top spots at the end of October in France and Germany. In the latter, Dan Brown beat out the Nobel Prize winner Herta Müller with The Lost Symbol debuting at #1 in Germany and Müller's Everything I Have I Carry with Me landing at #3. Last week, Müller's U.S. publisher, Metropolitan Books, announced that it had acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to Everything as well as The Fox Was Always a Hunter; Everything will be published in 2011. Two other Müller titles landed in the eighth and ninth spots in Spain last month.
Taking first place in France is the latest from bestselling science fiction author Bernard Werber; Cassandra's Mirror features a 17-year-old girl who sees the future. The Swedish thriller author Camilla Lackberg had the second bestselling fiction title in France last month, just ahead of Philip Roth. Lackberg's The Stone Cutter will be published in the U.K. by HarperCollins next February; HC UK has released two earlier titles. Lackberg will make her American debut next spring when Pegasus Books releases The Ice Princess. Pegasus acquired U.S. rights from HC UK for Princess as well as the follow-up to the title, The Preacher.
Swedish authors are well represented on the Spanish fiction list as well. Stieg Larsson remains a mainstay with the third volume in his Millennium series holding the #1, spot with volumes two and one in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Larsson is joined on the list by Swedish bestseller Henning Mankell with another in his popular Detective Wallander series debuting in the second spot. Mankell has several U.S. publishers, with the Wallander titles published by Vintage.
In nonfiction, Anthony Beevor's D-Day captured the top spot in Spain, marking the fifth country where his account of the Normandy landings hit #1.
