New fiction titles led bestseller lists in three major international markets in March.
Eight out of 10 slots on Germany's Buchreport fiction list were brand new. Bumble Dumb, the fourth novel by German comedian Tommy Jaud, took the top spot. But the list also included three American novels, including Abandoned by Cody McFadyen, which Bantam published in the U.S. last fall; The Humbling by Philip Roth, also out last fall in the U.S., from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; Blue Moon by Alyson Noël, which was published as YA here by St. Martin's Griffin; and Kill for Me by Karen Rose, released in the U.S. by Grand Central.
Spain's El Cultural fiction list had three new entries: The Siege by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, which Alfaguara will release in the U.S. May 31; The Strategy of the Water, a new thriller from Lorenzo Silva; and The Brightest Star in the Sky by Marian Keyes, which Viking published here in January.
In France, at least half of Livres Hebdo's fiction bestseller list consisted of books making their debut appearance. Titles from such Americans as Harlan Coben and Stephen King hit the list for the first time in the #1 and #6 spots, respectively. Meanwhile, Paul Auster, who resides in Brooklyn but has lived in Paris and enjoys a strong Gallic following, saw his new book, Invisible, land in the #3 spot.
There was lots of turnover in nonfiction top-sellers as well. Proving that skeptics of global warming don't only live in the U.S., a book that cast doubt on that theory, The Climate Swindle: The Wrong Ecology, landed at #3 in France at the end of March. —Lynn Andriani
