Kamil Named Random Publisher
Random House Publishing Group president and publisher Gina Centrello is turning over the publisher responsibilities to Susan Kamil. Kamil, who will remain editor-in-chief of little Random and Dial Press and edit a select number of books, will be responsible for running the day-to-day publishing operations of the group. Tom Perry has also been promoted, named deputy publisher. Perry was also named publisher of Modern Library.
As a result of Perry's promotion, Theresa Zoro, who's been bumped up to senior v-p and director of publicity for the Random House Publishing Group, and Sanyu Dillon will now report to Centrello. Additionally, Susan Corcoran has been promoted to v-p and director of publicity for Ballantine Bantam Dell.
Five Million Printing for New ‘Wimpy'
Abrams's Amulet Books imprint has set a five million–copy first printing for The Ugly Truth, the fifth book in Jeff Kinney's bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The book will be released November 9. In addition, Amulet is releasing a box set of the first four books in the series in September. More than 35 million Wimpy Kid books are in print in the U.S., and the books are available in more than 30 countries.
Skyhorse Acquires Arcade
Skyhorse Publishing has emerged as the winner in the auction for the assets of Arcade Publishing. Skyhorse had established itself as the stalking horse in the auction process earlier this summer with a bid of $318,000, and acquired the assets with a bid of $548,000. Arcade filed for bankruptcy last January. The purchase includes approximately 500 titles. Skyhorse is considering using the Arcade name for its more literary titles.
Amazon Adds Kindles
Amazon has added to its Kindle family, developing a new version that is smaller, lighter, and faster than the current device. While the 3G wireless edition will continue to sell for $189, Amazon has developed a Wi-Fi–only unit that it will sell for $139. Both units will be available August 27. In addition to offering the new devices in the U.S., both will be sold in the U.K. through Amazon.co.uk, the first time the company has offered the device through its U.K. site. To accompany the U.K. rollout, Amazon will launch the U.K. Kindle store, which will include over 400,000 U.K. e-books.
Peeters Up at Perseus
Clare Peeters has been promoted at Perseus Books Group from v-p, business operations, to v-p, corporate strategy and business development. Peeters joined Perseus Books in 2004 and has worked closely on Perseus' joint ventures and Constellation project.
