NewSouth Ups Print Run on New Twain
After PW broke the story last week that NewSouth is releasing a new version of Mark Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn without the "hurtful epithets" that have caused it to be dropped from school curricula, the press dealt with an unexpected and highly charged backlash. Despite the overwhelmingly negative reaction to the new edition, NewSouth, in the wake of all the attention, plans to increase its print run from the initial 7,500 to 10,000.

Big Gains for B&N
Barnes & Noble reported that same-store sales at B&N.com jumped 78% for the nine-week holiday period ended January 1, driven by sales of devices and e-books. Total sales at B&N.com rose 67% in the period, to $228.5 million. At its stores, sales increased 8.2% over the prior year period, to $1.1 billion, with comp-store sales up 9.7%, the best comp-store sales performance in more than a decade.

ProQuest Buys Ebray
Ebrary, one of the pioneers in aggregating books and other print content online, has been acquired by ProQuest for an undisclosed price. Founded in 1999 by Christopher Warnock and Kevin Sayar, ebrary hosts more than 273,000 digital books, handbooks, reports, maps, journals, and other content from about 500 publishers that it offers to libraries and other institutions under a variety of services and platforms.

Tyrus Books, Busted Flush Deal Off
Tyrus Books' acquisition of Busted Flush Press has been called off. According to both Tyrus's Ben LeRoy and Busted Flush's McKenna Jordan, settling the estate of David Thompson is taking longer than expected, with probate preventing Tyrus Books from assuming any legal authority over Busted Flush's operations or obtaining access to any revenue. Jordan terminated the agreement and will assume full legal and financial control of Busted Flush. Thompson, Jordan's late husband, died the day before he was to sign the contract that would have merged Busted Flush with Tyrus. Jordan expects to resume operations in five or six months.
