Germany’s top fiction title at the end of December, The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out His Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson climbed up from #5, supplanting previous chart-topper Inheritance (Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance was also #2 in Spain). Jonasson’s novel has sold more than one million copies in Sweden, and rights have been sold in 24 languages. Hyperion acquired world English rights and has an October pub date set in the U.S.
Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson continues its international success, appearing on all three of our featured lists, topping Germany’s nonfiction list, and moving up one spot each in both Italy and France.
Simon & Schuster bought the rights to Philippe Pozzo di Borgo’s The Second Wind, France’s #1 nonfiction title, late last year. The book was first published in France 10 years ago, but is seeing renewed success because of the 2011 French film adaptation of the book, titled Intouchables (Untouchables), which has almost 14 million tickets sold. S&S imprint Atria Books plans to publish Second Wind this year.
In Italy, the #5 title on the combined list is City of the Beasts by Isabel Allende, making a new appearance on the bestseller list. The book, a children’s adventure story, has been published in the U.S. by different HarperCollins imprints, including Rayo and Harper Perennial. Also debuting high in Italy last month was Christmas at Tiffany’s by U.K. author Karen Swan.
