International bestselling author Paulo Coelho debuted at #2 in Germany in January with his latest, Manuscript Found in Accra, a novel that takes place in the year 1099 as Jerusalem prepares for the invasion of the Crusaders. The book will be published by Knopf stateside this April.
Five of Italy’s top six bestsellers hit the list for the first time in January, including the #1 title, Cabin Fever—Jeff Kinney’s sixth in the Wimpy Kid series, which is finding international success. Since being published in 2011, the book has sold over 2.1 million print copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen BookScan. Another U.S. blockbuster that also made it onto Italy’s chart is John Grisham’s The Racketeer, at #3. Italy’s own Andrea Camilleri also debuted in January, landing at #4 with his latest, The Tuttomio. Penguin, Camilleri’s longtime U.S. publisher, will release the 15th novel in his Inspector Montalbano series, The Dance of the Seagull, February 26.
David Foenkinos’s new novel, I’m Better, debuted at #3 on the fiction chart in his native France. Most recently, Harper Perennial published Foenkinos’s Delicacy, in 2012—the same year it was released as a French film starring Audrey Tautou.
