Veronica Roth’s Divergent, the first book in her wildly popular series of the same name, was the most-talked-about title on social media in January. The number of conversations about the book grew steadily over the course of the month, as fans continue to anticipate the March 21 release of the film adaptation. The third and final book of the trilogy, Allegiant, published in October, was the second-most-discussed book of the month. Divergent and Allegiant landed at #2 and #5, respectively, on Nielsen BookScan’s bestseller list for the week ended January 26.
“A large percentage of the comments from fans of the [Divergent] series mentioned both books, which is not unusual for a popular series,” said Jeff Costello, v-p of CoverCake, which measures how books are faring on social media.
The big surprise of the month, according to Costello, was the appearance of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein on the list. The nearly 200-year-old classic generated significant online commentary, thanks to the January 24 release of I, Frankenstein, a film based loosely on Shelley’s story. “Movies based on classic novels tend to drive a lot of conversation, and this movie was no exception,” Costello observed.
Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson’s 2007 book about a Navy SEAL mission, landed at #4 on CoverCake’s chart. The book gained traction on social media thanks to the film adaptation of the same name, starring Mark Wahlberg, which has dominated the box office since its January 10 release.
Several new nonfiction titles joined the list this month, including David and Goliath, by Malcolm Galdwell, and Leaders Eat Last, by Simon Sinek. Published on January 28, La La Anthony’s The Love Playbook was #8 on CoverCake’s most recent chart. Anthony is the star of VH1’s La La’s Full Court Life, with husband and NBA star Carmelo Anthony; in the book, she shares her “rules for love, sex, and happiness.”
