Unit sales of print books rose 4% in the week ended June 15, 2014, compared to the similar week last year, at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan—the third consecutive week that book sales had a year-over-year increase. No author is having a better spring than John Green: his books occupied the five top spots in the juvenile fiction category in week 24, helping to boost sales in the segment by 20% over the week ended June 16, 2013. Paper Towns was the most recent Green book to hit the top of the juvenile list, with the backlist title moving up to #5, joining three editions of The Fault in Our Stars (in the first, second, and fourth slots) and Looking for Alaska (at #3). Adult nonfiction also had a strong performance, helped by the debut of Hillary Clinton’s Hard Choices, which sold over 85,000 copies in its first week on sale; units in the segment rose 4% over the similar week last year. The biggest new book out last week, however, was Diana Gabaldon’s new novel, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, which sold just under 89,000 copies at outlets that report to BookScan. Gabaldon’s strong showing helped limit the decline in adult fiction to 11%.
