The Weekly Scorecard: Tracking Unit Print Sales for Week Ending July 6, 2014

Unit sales of print books fell 1% in the week ended July 6, 2014, compared to week 27 of 2013 at outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. There were few big new books in the week, with the highest-ranking debut, the mass market paperback edition of Sandra Brown’s Deadline, landing in the 11th spot, selling over 21,000 copies. With the vacation season kicking into high gear with the arrival of the Fourth of July, new mass market paperbacks landed relatively high on the overall list. Nora Roberts’s The Perfect Hope was #20 on the combined list, selling over 17,000 copies, while Mary Balogh’s The Escape sold almost 14,000 copies, putting it at #29 for the week. The highest hardcover debut, at #31, was The City by Dean Koontz, which sold more than 13,000 copies. The lack of big new titles weighed down adult sales in week 27, but not so in the juvenile category, where John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars continued to rule. Two trade paperback editions (one the movie tie-in) were the two top-selling books in the week ended July 6, 2014, combining to sell about 120,000 copies. With Green and Veronica Roth’s titles taking seven of the juvenile fiction top 10 spots, sales in the category rose 6% in week 27 of 2014 compared to the week ended July 7, 2013.
