Greaney Flies Solo For New Tom Clancy
Tom Clancy: Support and Defend by Mark Greaney, the first Clancy novel for which the late spy-thriller novelist, who died in 2013, is not credited as author or coauthor, debuts at #2 on our Hardcover Fiction list this week, with 30,330 print units sold. Greaney coauthored three previous novels with Clancy, who, in his later years, also collaborated with Grant Blackwood and Peter Telep. Below, we see how Support and Defend’s initial outing stacks up against first-week sales for the previous four Clancy titles.
Taking Charge: ‘#Girlboss’ Holds Steady
It’s not every day that a debut title by a 30-year-old CEO lands on our Hardcover Nonfiction list, and rarer still is the title that maintains prominence over the following 12 weeks. But #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso, founder of online clothing retailer Nasty Gal, has done just that. The business/memoir/self-help hybrid debuted at #8 on our May 19 list, with 11,450 print units sold out of the gate, and has been a mainstay ever since, selling steadily in the 3K-per-week range. This week, the book is at #12, with 2,822 copies sold; to date, it has sold 45,775 copies. One more number: Nasty Gal is a $100 million company, but Amoruso’s business savvy is not the book’s only selling point; in the run-up to its release, numerous online outlets, among them Glamour, Inc., and Teen Vogue, featured interviews with the camera-ready author. New York magazine speculated that the author’s unconventional backstory (dropping out of community college; hitchhiking, dumpster-diving, shoplifting) speak to some readers in a way that Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg’s rarified résumé does not; PW’s review concurred, praising her candid disclosures and “authenticity.”—Carolyn Juris
