Jussi Adler-Olsen’s The Boundless, the sixth volume in the Danish author’s Department Q crime thriller series, held on to its top spot on Germany’s fiction list last month. Martin Walker’s The Children Return debuted on the list at #2. The book was released in the U.S. by Knopf in April (and published under the title Children of War in the U.K.).
The top two titles on Germany’s nonfiction list were both new to the chart. At #1 was Autumn Blond, the autobiography of Thomas Gottschalk, one of Germany’s most famous radio and television hosts. Inside ISIS, by Jürgen Todenhöfer, came in at #2. Todenhöfer, who the publisher said was the first Western journalist allowed into areas controlled by ISIS, reports on the everyday lives and motives of the ISIS fighters.
Like in Germany, the top-selling novel in France also led the chart the previous month: Guillaume Musso’s The Present Moment was once again at #1. Checkpoint, by Jean-Christophe Rufin, at #2, is new to the list. In the psychological thriller, Rufin follows 21-year-old humanitarian volunteer worker Maud, who is working on a convoy in Bosnia. Intrigue follows as her companions slowly reveal their “secret wounds,” and she finds out what they actually transport.
All three titles on France’s nonfiction chart are new releases, including #3, If We Love France, by the late economist and journalist Bernard Maris, who was killed during the attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. In this work, finished a few days before his death, Maris “draws a portrait of the France that he loves and regrets the pessimistic views on the nation’s current state.”
Sweden’s top title in April was also the bestselling novel at the end of March, Camilla Lackberg’s The Lion Tamer.
