The Weekly Scorecard: Tracking Unit Print Sales for Week Ending March 5, 2017

Unit sales of print books rose 2% in the week ended Mar. 5, 2017, compared to the similar week in 2016, at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. The adult nonfiction segment had the strongest performance of the week, with print unit sales up 4% from the week ended Mar. 6, 2016. The gain was driven by two new releases that topped the category’s bestseller chart: #1 was Portraits in Courage by George W. Bush, which sold slightly more than 39,000 copies, followed by Unshakeable by Tony Robbins, which sold more than 29,000 copies. The adult fiction category had a good week, with units up 3% from 2016. The increase was due in part to five new releases, which occupied spots 4–8 on the category bestseller list. The highest-ranking debut was Expecting to Die by Lisa Jackson, which sold almost 18,000 copies, and The Last Mile by David Baldacci was in fifth place on the bestseller chart, selling nearly 17,000 copies. Two editions of Wm. Paul Young’s The Shack—the original trade paperback and the movie tie-in—were in the first and third spots on the category list, selling more than 45,000 copies total. Print unit sales increased 2% in the juvenile fiction category, and the top of the chart was dominated by Dr. Seuss books. Nine of the top 10 bestselling books on the juvenile bestseller list were Seuss books, which sold a total of approximately 200,000 copies. Unit sales in the juvenile nonfiction category slipped by less than 1% in the week. There’s No Place Like Space by Tish Rabe was #1 on the bestseller list, with more than 13,000 copies sold.
