It’s a Family Affair
The #2 book in the country is Sleeping Beauties, the first collaboration between Stephen King and his younger son, Owen King. Our review called it a “delicious... horror-tinged realistic fantasy that imagines what could happen if most of the women of the world fall asleep, leaving men on their own.”
King père is on our list in two more spots, with the trade paper movie-tie-in edition of It (#1 in Trade Paperback for the third week in a row, #5 in the country) and a new hardcover edition of that book, #23 in Hardcover Fiction.
In a few weeks, Joe Hill (né King) will join his father and younger brother on the horror shelf with Strange Weather, pubbing October 24. For more on that book and other spine-chillers, check out our science fiction and fantasy feature, which includes a preview of forthcoming horror novels.

Movie Watch
Wonder is a bona fide phenomenon: R.J. Palacio’s debut middle grade novel has sold more than two million copies in hardcover since its 2012 publication. The film adaptation, which opens Nov. 17, was directed by The Perks of Being a Wallflower author Stephen Chbosky and stars Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, and Owen Wilson. As the movie gears up for release, the original edition of Wonder is the #6 book in the country, and a new tie-in edition debuts at #15 in Children’s Frontlist Fiction.
Branching Out
Katherine Applegate’s new middle grade novel, Wishtree, which addresses immigration and how society treats newcomers, debuts at #5 in Children’s Frontlist Fiction. The trade paper reprint of 2015’s Crenshaw debuts at #23 on the list. Applegate won the 2013 Newbery Medal for The One and Only Ivan, which has gone on to sell 924K print copies.
New & Notable
I’m Just No Good at Rhyming
Chris Harris and Lane Smith
#8 Children’s Frontlist Fiction
Our starred review had high praise for this debut collection of verse from TV writer and producer Harris, saying it “hits a poetry trifecta: high energy, rhymes that can rival Cole Porter’s (‘Nothing is impossible.... Every tooth is flossable’), and a torrent of ideas.”[strong]
Blue Ocean Shift
W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne
#8 Hardcover Nonfiction
The coauthors of 2005’s Blue Ocean Strategy—which, in the original and 2015 expanded editions, has sold 364K copies in hardcover—return with a “stirring business primer,” our review said, that shows “how organizations can move from fighting over crowded markets with competitors to creating their own markets.”
