Several new books explore the nexus between introspection and spirituality, urging readers to form a relationship with the self rather than with a higher power. With a focus on self-love, self-care, self-acceptance, self-knowledge, and more, authors are laying out new ways to find peace, purpose, and healing.
The Path to Self Love: Heal Your Heart, Set Healthy Boundaries & Unlock Your Inner Strength (Harmony, June) features hardships in author Ruby Dhal’s life: she was born in India to Sikh parents who had been forced to leave their homes in Afghanistan during a conflict between the Taliban and the government. At age three, Dhal and her family emigrated from India to the U.K. as refugees. Dhal’s life was also deeply impacted by the death of her mother as well as her father’s alcoholism.
Donna Loffredo, executive editor at Rodale and Harmony, was drawn to Dhal’s story as well as the author’s understanding of empathy. “Her childhood was marked by instability and loss, and so she had to cultivate self-love very intentionally as a young adult,” Loffredo says. “The Path to Self-Love is spiritual in the sense that it is focused on nourishing your heart and soul. It doesn’t touch on mysticism or any belief systems; it’s a book about healing your wounds and developing a healthy relationship with yourself.”
Manifest Anything You Want: Six Magical Steps to Create an Extraordinary Life by Shantini Rajah (Llewellyn, May) focuses both on attracting external desires and gaining confidence, peace, and courage internally. PW called it “approachable” and “grounded” in a review.
