President-elect Donald J. Trump is threatening to sue Penguin Random House and the New York Times for $10 billion over allegedly “false and defamatory statements” contained in articles written by Times journalists Peter Baker, Russ Buettner, Susanne Craig, and Michael S. Schmidt, according to a letter reviewed by the Columbia Journalism Review. The letter, signed by Trump lawyer Edward Andrew Paltzik, “singles out two stories coauthored by Buettner and Craig that related to their book on Trump and his financial dealings,” along with two other articles written individually by the Baker and Schmidt, per CJR.

In September, Penguin Press published Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success, cowritten by Buettner and Craig, which PW called, in its review, “a scrupulous takedown of Trump’s competence and character.” According to CJR, the Times “responded to the letter on October 31, referring Paltzik to Penguin Random House for claims against the book and stating that it stood by its reporting.”

CJR added that the letter was part of a larger effort from the Trump camp to accuse media outlets including CBS News, the Daily Beast, and the Washington Post of bias in reporting or other alleged actions—an effort reminiscent of Trump’s first term in the White House, when he regularly sued publishing houses that released books critical of him or his administration. In 2018, Trump attempted to block Henry Holt from publishing Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House by Michael Wolff, and variously threatened and sued Simon & Schuster over multiple titles.
