  • Lots of Little Improvements Make the Kindle 3 The Best E-Ink E-reader

    This is the best E-Ink device you can get right now. The changes and updates, while very cool, might not, however, justify scrapping your Kindle 2 in exchange for a Kindle 3--they're still pretty similar. But the much-crisper screen, faster processor, newly laid out controls, and other thoughtful tweaks make the Kindle 3 a pleasure to use.

  • Random House, Kobo, and Fairmont Hotels Partner to Loan E-Readers to Guests

    Random House, Kobo, and Fairmont Hotels are coming to the rescue of travelers who forgot to bring a book on vacation. Ten Fairmont hotels in the U.S. and Canada will have Kobo eReaders available for guests staying on Fairmont Gold, an exclusive "hotel within the hotel" that offers special perks.

  • B&N Introduces Nook for Android

    Barnes & Noble today introduced a Nook app for Android. It is the only Android e-reader app that allows readers to share e-books with friends. The company also announced that it will soon be rolling out updates of Nook for iPhone, Nook for iPad, and other e-reading apps in the coming months.

  • Sony Reader Sales Triple; iPad Sales Top 3 Million

    Kindle has reached its tipping point, and now the Sony Reader has, too. Earlier this year the 10 millionth book was downloaded from the Sony Reader Store, Phil Lubell, v-p of digital reading at Sony Electronics said today. Separately, Apple announced it has sold 3.27 million iPads.

  • Sony Quietly Lowers E-Reader Prices

    Despite a Sony spokesperson's claim a week ago that there would be no further price announcements, Sony quietly dropped the prices on all three of its e-reading devices over the July 4 weekend. The wi-fi enabled Daily Edition drops from $349 to $299; the Touch Edition drops from $199 to $169; and the Pocket Edition, formerly $169, is now $149.

  • Amazon Unveils New Kindle DX at Lower Price; Web Widgets

    Continuing to aggressively update its Kindle e-reading device, Amazon.com unveiled an updated model of its large-format Kindle DX reader with sharper image quality and a graphite covering for $379, a much lower price than the previous version of the Kindle DX. Amazon is also releasing a set of Kindle Web Widgets, a new embeddable web application for previewing Kindle titles in a web browser,

  • Amazon Releases Kindle for Android

    Continuing to add support for a wide range of devices, Amazon is releasing a free Kindle reading application for the Android operating system. The software can be downloaded from the Android Marketplace and will allow users with multiple devices to access any previously purchased Kindle books and to synch the last page read of any book across all of their devices.

  • Amazon Adds Multimedia to Kindle E-Book Software

    Amazon.com has updated its Kindle e-book software to support embedded audio and video for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Among the first Kindle titles to offer audio and video clips are Rick Steves’s London and Together We Cannot Fail by Terry Golway.

  • Copia Offers New Reading Devices, New Prices

    Adding still more volatility to the e-reading device market, Copia, DMC Worldwide's much anticipated reading device, social media and retail venture, announced still lower prices on a reconfigured line of devices beginning with 5" color LCD model for $99 and a 10.1" color LCD touchscreen for $299 that will support video and multimedia.

  • Price Cuts Roil the Market For Digital Readers

    Anyone attending the Consumer Electronics Show last January saw a small flood of e-readers—from a slew of Kindle-like e-ink devices to futuristic color dual-screen tablet ones—with prices ranging from $200 to about $800. But since then, Apple has released the iPad, and its iBookstore is now supported by the iPhone/iPod Touch; two or three e-ink devices slated for the spring have yet to appear; and most importantly, prices on the best-known e-ink reading devices are plummeting.

  • Borders Bundles Kobo with $20 Gift Card

    The e-reader pricing wars continue, with Borders today announcing that its $149 Kobo eReader will now be bundled with a $20 Borders gift card, and double Borders Bucks that can be used toward a future Borders purchase.

  • B&N, Amazon Drop Prices on E-Reading Devices

    In what is likely a preview of what's to come in the e-reading device marketplace, not long after Barnes & Noble introduced a wi-fi only Nook e-reader for $149 and dropped the price of the 3G Nook to $199, Amazon followed suit dropping the price of the Kindle to $189.

  • IREX Files for Bankruptcy

    In what looks to be an early casualty in the e-reading device wars, IREX, the Dutch firm set to release the DR800SG, a $399 3G wireless stylus-touchscreen e-book reader, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to lackluster sales.

  • E-Reader Wars Escalate: Target to Sell Kindle

    More from the e-reader wars: Target has confirmed that it will begin selling the Kindle in all its 1,740 stores starting this Sunday, making it the first brick-and-mortar retailer to carry the e-reading device. Target senior v-p Mark Schindele said Target customers' response to Kindle "has been overwhelmingly positive." Not to be outdone, Barnes & Noble today announced a promotion that offers a free $50 B&N gift card with any Nook purchase.

  • Borders Adds Libre e-Reader to its List

    Borders has begun taking pre-orders for a second e-reader, the Libre eBook Reader Pro developed by Aluratek. The reader is priced at $119.99 and will start shipping in August and be sold through stores in August.

  • The iPad Makes Its Presence Felt

    The spring release of the iPad had an immediate impact on the ebook device market, according to the third and final report of the Book Industry Study Group–sponsored study Consumer Attitudes Toward E-Book Reading.

  • Kindle for Android Coming this Summer

    This summer Amazon.com will release Kindle for Android, a free e-book application that adds e-book support for Google's popular and fast growing mobile phone operating system. Amazon's proprietary Kindle e-book format can now be read on a wide variety of devices including the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Blackberry as well as on PC and Mac laptops and desktops.

  • Canadian Publishers in Talks with Apple as iPad Orders Begin

    This week Apple opened the door for consumers in Canada and eight other countries to begin pre-ordering the iPad, which will be available to them on May 28. Apple has yet to negotiate contracts for content with many Canadian publishers, and Diana Barry, director of digital services for the Association of Canadian Publishers, which is representing many independent Canadian publishing houses, said so far ACP has had only "very preliminary conversation" with Apple.

  • Software Update Adds Functionality, Games to B&N′s Nook

    Barnes & Noble has added improved functionality, games, web browsing and other new features to its Nook digital reading device after issuing an over-the-air wi-fi software update.
