  • Authors on the Air: David Brooks, Joshua Foer

David Brooks, author of The Social Animal (Random, ISBN 978-1400067602), is on Good Morning America and The Colbert Report today. PW’s review said, “New York Times columnist Brooks (Bobos in Paradise) raids Malcolm Gladwell's pop psychology turf in a wobbly treatise on brain science, human nature, and public policy. Essentially a satirical novel interleaved with disquisitions on mirror neurons and behavioral economics, the narrative chronicles the life cycle of a fictional couple—Harold, a historian working at a think tank, and Erica, a Chinese-Chicana cable-TV executive—as a case study of the nonrational roots of social behaviors, from mating and shopping to voting.”

PW’s review of Ardency said, “The story of the Amistad is widely known.... The prolific Young (Dear Darkness) has organized a big and varied book around that story.... the book taken as a whole is more powerful than some of the individual poems. That whole is impressive indeed.”

Although Brokaw's advice is helpful and inspirational, it is also generic and familiar.

Pulling from those interviews, Burstein, the show's producer, gathers a diverse cast of characters (Chuck Close, Richard Ford, Isabel Allende, and Patti Lupone among them) who share their thoughts about the sources of their creativity: the influence of their parents, of place, or of a shattering event, or the stimulation of working with a creative partner.”

PW’s review said, “When a man meets his future wife in the subway, Sabar could be describing the city itself when he notes its appeal: "Anonymity--the ability to be simultaneously surrounded by and withdrawn from other people." Sabar may want readers to deeply consider his thesis but the strength of this effort lies in its sweetness.”

Pearlman's characters for the most part are stiff-upper-lipped Northeasterners who take what comes and don't grumble.”
