  • New Wimpy Kid Crosses 1 Million Copies Sold

    Book seven of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, The Third Wheel, has passed the million mark in physical copies sold, according to Nielsen BookScan. The book will end the year as the #6 bestselling book of the year, placing behind only the Fifty Shades trilogy, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.

  • Reidy Touts a Reshaped Simon & Schuster

    In her annual letter to employees, Simon & Schuster CEO Carolyn Reidy’s emphasis was on how the publisher has re-tooled to reach both its traditional audience and the growing number of digital readers.

  • Scholastic Imposes Hiring Freeze

    As part of its effort to cut costs by $20 million to $30 million in fiscal 2013, Scholastic executives told analysts on a conference call Thursday morning that the company has instituted a hiring freeze and will also reduce staffing levels in some areas.

  • Samhain Uploads 2,000 Titles to PubMatch

    Samhain Publishing has uploaded over 2,000 titles to PubMatch, complete with full descriptions and EPUB files so that users can view partial contents of each book. The titles were uploaded via Ingram's CoreSource. Currently, the American Library Association is in the process of uploading their last two years of publications via CoreSource, as well.

  • Sargent Says Macmillan Will Press Ahead in DoJ Lawsuit

    In a letter sent to authors, illustrators and agents Wednesday afternoon, Macmillan CEO John Sargent said that despite Penguin’s decision to settle with the Department of Justice in its e-book pricing-fixing lawsuit, Macmillan’s position “has not changed.” Sargent’s letter didn’t limit itself to the DoJ though, and included his thoughts on “flightless birds and consolidation” and the digital transformation.

  • Prairie Lights Starts Small Press

    Prairie Lights is launching a small press to supplement its bookstore operations. Prairie Lights Books will be distributed by the University of Iowa Press, which is also producing and marketing the books. The first two Prairie Lights Books titles will be released in spring 2013.

  • IBPA Selects MetaComet

    The Independent Book Publishers Association selected MetaComet Systems as an approved member benefit provider. IBPA members now qualify for special discounts and benefits on MetaComet Systems’ royalty management software. “We are pleased to offer our members a discount on MetaComet’s services and add MetaComet to the many money-saving goods and services available to IBPA members.” says Florrie Binford Kichler, IBPA president.
