Downloads Gain in 2007 09/22/2008
The spoken-word audiobook market grew again in 2007, with sales up 12%, to just over $1 billion, and the percentage of adults who now listen to audiobooks increased from 25% in 2006 to 28% last year, according to the Audio Publishers Association's annual sales and consumer surveys. Sales of CDs and downloads increased in the year, while sales of cassettes declined.

On July 25, Playaway, a division of Ohio-based Findaway World that manufactures preloaded audio book players, sold its millionth unit as part of an order placed by the military for shipment overseas to soldiers and their families. The Playaway device is a compact audio player that comes preloaded with one digital audio book and has a headphone jack and basic playback controls.
