One of the most anticipated films of 2010—at least on the children’s side of things—is the adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the first book in Jeff Kinney’s bestselling series, which arrives in theaters on April 2. To get readers ready, on March 16 Abrams’s Amulet Books imprint will publish Kinney’s The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary, a behind-the-scenes from the author’s perspective, about the moviemaking process.
“When I decided to work with Twentieth Century Fox to bring Diary of a Wimpy Kid to life as a live-action movie, I didn't know what to expect,” said Kinney in a statement. “I was fascinated by the filmmaking process, and I thought my readers might be as wide-eyed and interested as I was. In The Wimpy Kid Move Diary, I’ve tried to tell the story of how a movie gets made in a way that will entertain and inform kids.”
Like many “making of” style books, The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary will include color stills, storyboards, and concept drawings; these will be accompanied by text and illustrations by Kinney, who is an executive producer on the film. The fifth, as yet untitled, Wimpy Kid book is due in fall 2010. There are more than 27 million Wimpy Kid titles in print.
