Scholastic plans to publish a series of young adult novels based on the videogame franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s, under license from developer Scottgames, in collaboration with its licensing agent, Striker Entertainment.
The first title, Five Nights at Freddy’s: The Silver Eyes, was written by game creator Scott Cawthon with Kira Breed-Wrisley and self-published in 2015. After light editing and a redesign, it will be published in paperback this October. Two more novels, as well as an in-world guide, will be released in 2017 and 2018. The audience consists of upper middle-grade to young adult readers, skewing toward boys but with some appeal to girls as well.
“Everyone was talking about it and playing it,” says Debra Dorfman, v-p, publisher at Scholastic. “It’s just scary enough for kids, and there’s a lot of lore that can unfold.”
Five Nights at Freddy’s, a horror-survival game that takes place in a pizza restaurant, debuted in 2014.
