Each year on March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday, the National Education Association holds its annual nationwide reading celebration, Read Across America. The initiative sparked a boost in sales for some of Seuss's classic titles.
Last week, Dr. Seuss books owned 17 of the 25 spots on PW's Picture Books bestseller list, and four of the top 10 titles on the Overall bestseller list, including the #1 spot, claimed by Green Eggs and Ham. Sales for Green Eggs and Ham more than doubled from the previous week, selling over 56,000 copies, up from just under 25,000 copies the week before, according to the outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, which sat at #2, also doubled its sales over the previous week, up to nearly 48,000 copies from just under 22,000. The Cat in the Hat, at #4, was up from roughly 15,000 copies to over 37,000, and Fox in Sox, which came in at #9, sold over 28,000 copies last week, up from 10,000 the week before.
