Christopher Pike’s YA horror novel The Midnight Club, which was published nearly 20 years ago, has found its home with streaming service Netflix and will make its screen debut on October 7. At the reins of the adaptation is Mike Flanagan, known for his previous Netflix horror creations such as Haunting of Hill House, Haunting of Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass. Flanagan reunites with former Haunting of Bly Manor crew members for this project, which was co-adapted alongside Leah Fong and executive produced by Julia Bicknell, Intrepid Pictures partner Trevor Macy, and Fong. Pulling from Pike’s original novel, the new series features eight residents at a manor looking for signs of the supernatural.
Released in 1994, the novel follows a group of five teens residing at Rotterdam House, a facility for the terminally ill, who enjoy telling one another haunting stories at midnight. One night the group promises that should one of them die, the rest will attempt to contact them in the afterlife, and when the time finally comes, the teens’ vow opens up more than they bargained for. A new edition of the book will be released this month from Simon & Schuster, ahead of the Netflix release.
“The Midnight Club was a particular shock to me as a teenager because I thought I was getting this pulpy little YA novella that would be about a spooky Grim Reaper or something,” Flanagan said in a statement. “But no, it was about teenagers having to reconcile with terminal diseases and with death. And it didn’t pull its punches there either. It was a real lesson in how you could use genre to talk about very serious things.”
Cast members of Flanagan’s previous Netflix series Midnight Mass are slated to make appearances in The Midnight Club, including Rahul Kohli, Samantha Sloyan, and Zach Gilford. To watch the trailer, click here.
