In celebration of LGBTQ+ History month in October, nonprofit organization Parents, Families, & Friends of LGBT National has brought together a number of celebrities to voice characters in a video adaptation of picture book The Mother of a Movement: Jeanne Manford—Ally, Activist, and Co-Founder of PFLAG.
PFLAG partnered with the American Psychological Association for a special reading of Rob Sanders and Sam Kalda’s picture book The Mother of a Movement. It follows the story of PFLAG founder Manford after her son was attacked by police for sharing pro-gay leaflets. Manford’s response to the police led to a march, which later inspired Manford to bring parents of queer children together to help build a stronger community. Approaching its 50th anniversary next year, PFLAG is now the first and largest organization uniting parents and families with members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The video for The Mother of a Movement premiered on September 19 on YouTube with celebrity readers lending their voices to the characters. Audiences may recognize the voices of Dan Bucatinsky, Michael D. Cohen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ilana Glazer, Meena Harris, Jessica Hecht, chef Melissa King, Alec Mapa, Max Mutchnick, Kumail Nanjiani, Avi Roque, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Amy Schneider.
