Recently, children’s writers spent a weekend together for a workshop, an author shared her picture book biography of a late writer, alpacas were the star of a launch event, and young readers enjoyed a food-centric storytime.
Into the Woods
The Big Sur Writer’s Workshop, an event sponsored by Andrea Brown Literary Agency, took place February 21–23 in Monterey, Calif. This session brought together 145 writers from across the country to work with publishing professionals via panels and critique groups. Here, the Big Sur faculty (from l.) Paige Terlip, Alison Nolen, Sally Kim, Eileen Robinson, Melissa Manlove, Jennifer Laughran, Jamie Weiss Chilton, Kathleen Rushall, Dev Petty, Caryn Wiseman, Kelly Sonnack, and Saritza Hernandez enjoy s’mores by the fire.
To Be Loved
On February 18, the New School in New York City gave Andrea Davis Pinkney (r.) a warm welcome for her event celebrating the release of her new picture book And She Was Loved: Toni Morrison’s Life in Stories, illustrated by Daniel Minter (Little, Brown). Her daughter Chloe Pinkney (l.) joined her for a conversation about the book, which traces the life and work of the celebrated writer and editor.
Let’s ‘Pac’ It Up
Carrie Tillotson made her way to Sherwood, Ore., alpaca farm Alpacas of Oregon on February 22 for a fitting event celebrating the release of her new picture book Alpacas Here, Alpacas There, illustrated by Elisa Chavarri (Beach Lane). Tillotson’s latest book highlights the care of alpacas in North and South America, and how they’ve gone from wild to domesticated creatures. The author hosted a storytime and attendees created bookmarks with tassels made from real alpaca fleece and got the opportunity to meet alpacas.
Voracious Readers
On March 2, Joyce Wan visited Watchung Booksellers: The Kids Room in Montclair, N.J., for a storytime event featuring her newest picture book, Be My Yummy ABC (Hippo Park). The book helps readers memorize the alphabet via delicious international treats. Following the reading, Wan held a signing for guests.
