E-book subscription service Scribd announced it has signed a global deal that will make Smashwords titles available in the Scribd library. The deal with Smashwords brings over 225,000 titles to Scribd. There are two components to the agreement. Smashwords will supply books to Scribd's new e-book subscription service, offering unlimited reading for $8.99 per month. Additionally, Smashwords e-books will also be available for individual sale to Scribd customers.
"Since we started the company, Scribd's mission has always been about creating an ecosystem to democratize content, and bring together a community of writers and readers," says Trip Adler, CEO and cofounder of Scribd. "Smashwords authors include everything from New York Times bestsellers to up-and-coming writers across a diverse range of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. I know our readers will be excited to have access to these works as part of our subscription service."
Under the agreement, Smashwords authors will have the ability to distribute their e-books across Scribd's services on the iPhone, iPad, Android mobile devices, and on web browsers. Scribd will also supply the authors with e-book marketing tools, such as proprietary author data and merchandising to Scribd's users around the world, which number at over 80 million.
In addition, Smashwords authors will each have a profile page, which authors can use to promote their own books, each Smashwords authors will receive a one-year subscription to Scribd's new subscription service, and Scribd will feature Smashwords authors on its blog and social media channels.
