Amazon Publishing has launched Amazon Original Stories, a new imprint that will release short fiction and nonfiction works that can be read in a single sitting. The essays and reported pieces, available in the Kindle Singles store, will be free to Prime and Kindle Unlimited members. The pieces will be $1.99 for all other customers.
The imprint's first titles are The Sign of the Beast by Joyce Carol Oates and Crown Heights by Colin Warner and Carl King. Forthcoming 2018 titles from the imprint include works by W. Kamau Bell, Jade Chang, Eddie Huang, Janice Y.K. Lee, Walter Kirn, Dean Koontz, Wednesday Martin, Nick McDonell, Harold Schechter, Dan Slater, Dodai Stewart, and Susan Straight.
“The goal of Amazon Original Stories is to champion stories, essays, and reporting by the premiere storytellers of our time and to introduce unforgettable new voices to Prime and Kindle Unlimited members,” Julia Sommerfeld, editorial director of Amazon Original Stories, said in a statement. “As we’ve seen through the great response to work available through Kindle Singles, powerful stories can be told in a single sitting and are another wonderful outlet for writers to reach readers. We plan to introduce new storytelling experiences in the coming months.”
The works, according to a representative of Amazon Publishing, will range from 5,000 to 20,000 words. Some stories published by the imprint will also include audio narration.
