M. David Detweiler IV, president and chairman of the board of Stackpole, Inc., died on September 27 in Harrisburg, Penn. He was 67 years old.

In 1981, Detweiler joined Stackpole, Inc., which was founded by his grandfather in the 1930s. He became president in 1989, and was named chairman of the board in 1998. Stackpole, Inc. is the parent company to Stackpole Books, a trade book publisher of outdoor, military history and craft titles. In addition to publishing books, Detweiler created and developed two magazines, Wildfowl Carving and Rug Hooking.

“David loved the company he and his family created and built and he worked tirelessly—even through illness—for the firm," said publisher of Stackpole Books Judith M. Schnell. "Stackpole was his life’s work. We shall miss his distinctive leadership and his exemplary style.”

Detweiler is the author of two nonfiction books and several novels. Most recently he wrote Gettysburg: The Story of the Battle with Maps, with co-editor David Reisch. This fall, a successor volume by Detweiler, The Civil War: The Story of the War with Maps, will be published by Stackpole.

John Granatino will now chair the board, and Schnell will continue her role as publisher while serving as CEO of Stackpole, Inc.
