After a long struggle with cancer, Scott Meyer, founder of Merritt Bookstore in Millbrook, N.Y., passed away on Sunday at The Kent, a nursing home facility in Kent, Ct. He was 72.
In a note posted on the front page of the Merritt Bookstore website, Meyer’s wife Alison announced his death and wrote, “[Scott] lived a quality life doing what he loved and has left us all the better for it. I know that he would want to be thanking everyone now for sharing your time with him.”
In advance of entering hospice earlier this year, Meyer put the bookstore he founded in 1983 up for sale. To date, a buyer has not come forward.
Suzanna Hermans, owner of Oblong Books & Music in Millerton and Rhinebeck told the Poughkeepsie Journal that Meyer is a "legend" in the Millbrook community. "The work that he has done for books and authors and readers is unmeasurable," she said.
The date and time of a memorial service will be posted on the Merritt Bookstore site.
