Lucia Bernard, senior designer in the Penguin Black interior design department, died on November 18. She was 29.
Bernard was an award-winning designer who worked on marquee books across a number of Penguin imprints. Books to which she contributed design include Time Is a Mother by Ocean Vuong and She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, published by Penguin Press; Matrix by Lauren Groff and Trust by Hernan Diaz, published by Riverhead; and The Midnight Library by Matt Haig and The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki, published by Viking.
“In her more than six years with the company, Lucia touched not only her teammates in design, production, art, and editorial, but also the many grateful authors whose books were elevated by her gifted vision,” Penguin Random House said in a statement. “Her passions were wide-ranging,” the company added, and included “octopi and deep undersea creatures, pasta dishes, Montana, crosswords and jigsaw puzzles, scary movies, true crime accounts, fonts, patterns in nature, her friends, her dog Spot, sushi, saguaro cacti, Korean lunches, warm chocolate chip cookies from Pret, whimsical drawings, and naps.”
Bernard is survived by her mother and father, André and Jennie, and her sister Eenie, all of whom previously worked in publishing. Details for a memorial to be held by Penguin Random House are forthcoming.
