Barnes & Noble announced the six finalists for its 2013 Discover Great New Writers Awards, which "highlight works of exceptional literary quality that might otherwise be overlooked in a crowded book marketplace."

The winners in each category, announced March 5, will receive $10,000 and a full year of additional promotion from Barnes & Noble. Second-place finalists receive $5,000, and third-place finalists receive $2,500.

This year's fiction judges were A. Manette Ansay, Carrie Brown, and Charles Yu. The nonfiction judges included Gail Caldwell, Andre Dubus III, and Paul Elie.

The selections to the Discover Great New Writers Awards, founded in 1990, featured the works of 51 writers. Submissions to the program are read and discussed by a group of B&N booksellers before selection for the program’s seasonal promotions.
