African-American-Interest Collection Development for Libraries

Some call it multicultural, some call it Africana, some call it a “special collection”; but whatever it’s called, the procurement of materials that reflect black culture is a part of a librarian’s job, and we wanted to hear how it’s done across school libraries, public libraries and higher academic libraries.

Accordingly, PW spoke to a small sampling of librarians in different systems, plus library vendors close to the issue, to hear their thoughts and find out more about the behind-the-scenes methodology used by libraries to collect materials for and by African-Americans, and what tips and sources they recommend.
