Books-A-Million, which has been taking over the leases of former Borders locations since summer, has officially announced its store plans for the holiday season. Beginning October 28 and continuing through mid-November BAM! will open a total of 41 new stores, said BAM! president Terry Finley. Fourteen of those leases were acquired through the auction process and the balance were signed in deals with various landlords.
In addition to opening the 41 outlets, BAM! is closing 21 stores leaving the country’s second largest bookstore chain with over 250 outlets. The expansion will move BAM! into eight new states, and Finley noted that most of the sites where BAM! is opening are new areas for the company.
Store sizes will range from 3,500 sq. ft. former Borders Express to 30,000 sq. ft. superstores. The product mix, while tweaked for different locations, will feature the basic BAM! mix. “They’ll look and feel like BAM! stores,” Finley said. He noted that in most locations BAM! will be the only bookstore.
