Sales (and) Goals
On July 5, the U.S. women’s soccer team beat Japan 5–2 in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final. While we await news that hat-trick hero Carli Lloyd is writing a memoir, her teammate Alex Morgan has been making her name in children’s publishing, launching the middle-grade footie-themed series The Kicks in 2013; her YA memoir, Breakaway, pubbed in June. Unit sales total almost 90K to date, with each title getting a bump the week after the final. Here’s a look.

Tie-in Watch
Will John Green strike box office gold twice? As the July 24 release date for Paper Towns nears, two editions of the YA novel are among the top-selling books in the country this week: the 2009 trade paper edition is at #2, second only to Grey, and the tie-in edition, which pubbed in May, is at #6. The #5 book, meanwhile, is The Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz, a prequel to the Disney Channel TV movie Descendants, premiering July 31.
Elsewhere in YA page-to-screen adaptations, the revised and movie tie-in editions of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews are #5 and #9, respectively, in Children’s Frontlist Fiction; the movie opened June 12.
Over on the adult lists, tie-in editions of Zoo by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge, which spawned the CBS-TV series that premiered June 30, are at #10 on the Mass Market Paperback list and #14 on the Trade Paperback list. The trade paper tie-in edition of American Sniper by Chris Kyle is #15 on that list, and two notches below is the tie-in edition of Dark Places by Gillian Flynn; that movie opens August 7.
