With 18 days left on its $50,000 Indiegogo fundraising campaign, Bluestockings Bookstore and Activist Center on New York City’s Lower East Side has reached 75% of its goal. The shop, which is one of 13 feminist bookstores remaining in the U.S., has, to date, raised $29,000 through Indiegogo and another $8,800 in direct contributions.
The store owners are hoping, with the Indiegogo campaign, to make improvements to their physical space, among other things. With the influx of cash already raised, the bookstore has started making updates. “We have begun purchasing new computers and moving to a updated database/POS system,” co-owner Sarah Olle told Bowery Boogie. “We will begin the facility repairs and an awning renovation process likely in November.”
To celebrate the success of the campaign, which should ensure the store another five years at its current location, Bluestockings is holding a BYOB party on Halloween Eve. “We’re inviting rad folks from all over the city to come hear about our plans for the store’s future, and to chat about what we can all do to keep radical spaces alive in NYC,” the store posted on its Facebook page.
